A selective breeding experiment was undertaken to produce a totally freshwater strain of Macrobrachium nipponense with freshwater tolerant larval stages. Selection for this trait increased survival by 50% in two families over three generations (). The heritability of larval freshwater tolerance (LFT) was determined by using a threshold model based on two phenotypic classes (live or dead). Heritability was estimated as response to selection over three generations for each of three different families used in the study. The average heritability over all families and all generations was 0.24±0.065 and is indicative of the genetic response obtained in this experiment and not an estimate for the species. This work shows the potential for the selection of totally freshwater strains of this and other Macrobrachium species for aquaculture.en_UK
