| Abstract: | The alignment of strategic decision-making with corporate performance has become increasingly crucial as firms navigate the dual pressures of a complex global economic landscape and the growing imperative of sustainable development. As the principal drivers of strategic direction within an organisation, the attributes of top management teams exert a profound influence on both corporate trajectories and performance outcomes. The Chinese economy currently stands at a pivotal juncture, characterised by a transition towards high-quality growth. In this evolving context, the ability of enterprises to formulate sound and well-informed strategic decisions amidst uncertainty has garnered considerable interest from both academic circles and industry professionals. In recent years, the prominence of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles has grown markedly. Companies are now expected not only to deliver robust financial results but also to demonstrate leadership in environmental contribution, social responsibility, and effective governance. ESG performance has emerged as a key indicator of long-term corporate value and societal impact, drawing significant attention from a wide range of stakeholders, including investors, regulators, and consumers. Against this background, it is of particular importance to investigate the extent to which the characteristics of top management teams influence ESG performance. This thesis investigates the influence of top management team (TMT) characteristics on ESG performance, drawing upon key TMT demographic traits. Emphasis is placed on examining how these characteristics shape ESG outcomes within firms. In addition, the thesis considers the role of differences in corporate ownership (state-owned or private), analysing its effects on ESG performance. Through the application of quantitative methods, the research uncovers the underlying mechanisms by which TMT attributes and corporate ownership differences impact ESG performance. For example, the extent to which senior executives have experience in research and development boosts ESG outcomes in private firms, but not in state-owned ones, contingent on the institutional setting and market responsiveness. Ultimately, the thesis offers both theoretical contributions and practical guidance to support firms in their pursuit of sustainable development. |
