Abstract: | First paragraph: In July 1986 the British government published a Green Paper proposing important changes to the way workers are paid. This government initiative has been stimulated in part by the belief that something has gone wrong with the 'wage system', under which employees are paid a roughly fixed wage and unemployment fluctuates severely. The Green Paper argues that Britain's economic prospects would be improved by a move to a method of remuneration which would make pay more flexible. |
