This chapter discusses work by Jane Austen, Jane West and Mary Brunton in the context of the aftermath of the French Revolution, arguing both that Austen's work is in conversation with that of West and Brunton and that emotional regulation (in particular emotional self-regulation) is a key area of interest in the four texts under consideration. These are Jane West's "A Gossip's Story", Mary Brunton's "Self Control", and Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility" and "Mansfield Park".en_UK
