Poeta en Nueva York/Poet in New York reflects Lorca’s experiences in New York and Cuba. The personal crisis he was facing is projected on the alienating context that surrounded him, and results in a text full of powerful metaphors and crossed meanings, anxious portrayals of life in the big city and images of destruction, violence and death. My proposal reads these evocations from the perspective of Gothic studies, with the aim of illuminating the dark transgressions proposed by the text. Thus, this analysis uses concepts such as the grotesque (Bakhtin), the abject (Kristeva) and the uncanny (Freud) to interpret the images presented by Lorca in his poems. It also contrasts the claustrophobic spaces of New York with the somber and ambiguous atmospheres of the literature of terror and redefines the concept of Otherness in relation to the uncertainties generated in/by the Gothic. | en_UK |
