Abstract: | This is the introductory essay of a special issue for the bicentenary of the Spanish uprising of 1808. The essay reconsiders the interpretation of nineteenth-century culture and historicism in the light of post-revisionist understandings of history and especially in relation to revaluations of the Romantic and Post-Romantic periods. |
