This chapter introduces readers to the concept and contemporary features of global food security governance (GFSG). While some form of what we would recognize as global food security governance has existed since the post-war era (after 1945), in recent decades there has been a dramatic change in the institutions and practices seeking to govern production, distribution and access to food that travels across borders. These changes in global food security governance matter because they directly shape the macro-structures within which food systems function. Therefore, understanding the changes in global food security governance is crucial for understanding the prospects and challenges for transitioning to just and sustainable food systems.en_UK
