A break with the past

Title: A break with the past
Author(s): Lai, Ten-Herng
Abstract: First paragraph: Over the past decade, many statues commemorating problematic historical figures have become forcefully contested. In one of the most prominent instances, after a statue of Cecil Rhodes was removed in South Africa, the Rhodes Must Fall movement quickly spread to Oriel College, Oxford. Despite the recommendation of an independent commission, the college eventually decided to keep Rhodes’ statue, citing pressure from donors, financial costs, and regulatory obstacles. Then, the Black Lives Matter Movement led to protests over the statue of the slave trader Edward Colston at Bristol Harbour. The statue was defaced, pulled down, and dragged and thrown into the docks – where ships of his company had set sail on the voyage to commit one of the most systematic violations of human rights in history – before eventually being fished out to be displayed, lying down, in a museum.

Shell's legal victory is disappointing - but this is not the end for corporate climate litigation

Title: Shell's legal victory is disappointing - but this is not the end for corporate climate litigation
Author(s): van Asselt, Harro; Savaresi, Annalisa
Abstract: First paragraph: In the first ruling of its kind, the Dutch Hague District Court in 2021 ordered a fossil fuel company, Shell, to slash its emissions. This decision would have required the oil and gas giant to cut its emissions by 45% by 2030 (compared with 2019 levels) across its operations and beyond, including so-called “scope 3 emissions” – those arising from burning the fossil fuels Shell has sold.

Wisdom of Crowds

Title: Wisdom of Crowds
Author(s): Ebert, Philip; Zweifel, Benjamin
Wisdom of crowds in den Bergen?
