| Abstract: | The European Union (EU) has committed to develop measures to get to net zero emissions by 2050. The land sector, comprising emissions and removals from land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) plays a central role in this race. This article paints a picture of the status quo and of the ongoing debate concerning new measures that the EU may adopt in the near future, in order to balance emissions and removals in the land sector. It considers the internal dimension of EU climate action, assessing how the EU 2020 and 2030 climate and energy policy frameworks deal with the land sector. It also considers the external dimension of EU climate action, analysing measures adopted to deal with the EU’s impacts on land uses beyond its borders. |
