Abstract: In this case study the author outlines the impact of consultancy sessions with an athlete while enrolled on the British Psychological Society's (BPS) Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology (QSEP). The case addresses a number of the consultancy related competencies (e.g. establish, develop and maintain working relationships with clients, conduct consultancy) but the main focus is on considering personal and professional standards and ethical issues. In doing so, the author briefly outlines the consultancy that took place as well as the steps taken during the process of seeking a clinical referral. The article concludes with personal reflections and an evaluation of the referral process from the perspective of a trainee sport psychologist.
